{"id":269,"date":"2021-08-04T12:13:13","date_gmt":"2021-08-04T02:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aibi.qld.edu.au\/Hospitality\/?p=269"},"modified":"2021-08-04T12:25:03","modified_gmt":"2021-08-04T02:25:03","slug":"managing-risk-in-the-food-services-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aibi.qld.edu.au\/Hospitality\/managing-risk-in-the-food-services-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Managing Risk in the Food Services Industry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following provides practical guidance to assist persons conducting a business or undertaking (<strong><em>PCBUs<\/em><\/strong>) in the food services industry to meet their work health and safety duties. The food services industry includes businesses that prepare and serve food, such as <strong>restaurants, caf\u00e9s, clubs, bars, pubs, fast food outlets etc.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There can be significant health and safety&nbsp;<em>risks<\/em>&nbsp;in the food services industry, increased in part by the large proportion of young (15-24 years old), part-time or casual workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work is typically physically demanding and conducted under pressure which may lead to a higher risk of injuries. Also, workers are required to engage with the public which introduces an increased risk of violence and harassment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Young workers may be at an increased risk of workplace injury due to their lack of experience and maturity, and they may be less aware of&nbsp;WHS risks&nbsp;and responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may also be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>developing their skills, competencies and physical capabilities<\/li><li>unfamiliar with appropriate workplace behaviours<\/li><li>reluctant to make requests, ask questions or speak out about problems<\/li><li>overly keen to please and make a good impression, and<\/li><li>over-confident in their capabilities.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Managing risks&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a&nbsp;<em>PCBU<\/em>, you must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of workers and others at your workplace. This includes providing and maintaining a work environment that is without&nbsp;<em>risks<\/em>&nbsp;to physical and psychological health and safety and ensuring workers are given the necessary information, training, instruction and supervision that is needed for them to carry out their work safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To manage health and safety&nbsp;<em>risks<\/em>&nbsp;you must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>identify&nbsp;<em>hazards<\/em>&nbsp;in the workplace&nbsp;<\/li><li>assess the associated&nbsp;<em>risks<\/em><\/li><li>implement&nbsp;<em>control measures<\/em>&nbsp;to eliminate or minimise&nbsp;<em>risks<\/em>, and<\/li><li>regularly review&nbsp;<em>control measures<\/em>&nbsp;to ensure they remain effective.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must do these things <strong>in consultation with your workers<\/strong> and any health and safety representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are guidelines to assist your Safety representatives to carry out their duties under the Act:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worksafe.qld.gov.au\/laws-and-compliance\/codes-of-practice\">https:\/\/www.worksafe.qld.gov.au\/laws-and-compliance\/codes-of-practice<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How long is it since you have reviewed your WHS practices and procedures?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contact Anne (0431 969 595) or<a href=\"mailto:anne.finamore@aibi.qld.edu.au?subject=WHS%20query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> email<\/a> to discuss our comprehensive (Cert IV level) course <strong><em>Implement and monitor WHS practices<\/em><\/strong> which will bring you up to date on current and impending changes across the sector.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following provides practical guidance to assist persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) in the food services industry to meet their work health and safety duties.
